England top World Cup group with 2-0 victory against Panama

England’s spot in the World Cup round of 32 was already guaranteed before their meeting with Panama on Saturday. 

But their 2-0 victory against a resilient Panama side ensured their progress to the knockout stage as group winners. 

The Red Tide had suffered a 6-1 thrashing against England at Russia 2018, but this was far from a one-sided contest. 

The North American nation frustrated their opponents in the first-half with their compact defensive structure. 

England once again dominated possession but created precious little of genuine quality. 

Jude Bellingham, however, broke the deadlock after the hour mark, turning in a clever finish from Bukayo Saka’s corner. 

The Real Madrid star then turned creator, as he delivered a brilliant cross for Harry Kane to head home his 82nd goal in 117 appearances for the Three Lions. 

Panama thought they had scored a consolation in stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for offside. 

Reece James was Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice right-back, but he picked up a hamstring injury to miss Saturday’s group finale. 

Jarrel Quansah deputised for James against Panama, but he was forced off in the second-half. 

England’s reward for topping Group L is a meeting with DR Congo in the round of 32 in Atlanta. 

The Three Lions haven’t been entirely convincing in the tournament so far. Their defensive vulnerability is particularly a cause for concern. 

But Tuchel’s men will look to step up their game in the knockout stage, where there is no margin for error.
