England failed to build on their impressive 4-2 success over Croatia, as they were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Ghana in their second group stage match on Tuesday. 

The Three Lions’ glittering array of attacking players suggested they would have no trouble against the 64th-ranked team in the world. 

But Ghana delivered a defensive masterclass to come away with a point, keeping alive their qualification hopes to the knockout stage.

Kane kept quiet

Kane came into the World Cup off the back of a remarkable season at Bayern Munich, scoring 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances. 

The 32-year-old carried his form into the tournament, scoring twice in England’s opening fixture against Croatia. 

But Kane was kept quiet throughout the game by Ghana, with the Black Stars’ compact defensive structure successfully limiting his influence. 

The experienced centre-forward had a golden opportunity to score late on, but he blazed over from close range. 

Gordon’s struggles 

Manager Thomas Tuchel started Anthony Gordon ahead of Marcus Rashford in both World Cup matches. 

However, the 25-year-old hasn’t done much to justify his position in the team. 

Following an underwhelming display against Croatia, Gordon also offered little against Ghana on Tuesday and was rightly taken off after the hour mark.

England’s outstanding attacking display against Croatia raised expectation and excitement levels, but they suffered a reality check with the latest stalemate. 

The Three Lions completely dominated possession but created precious little of genuine quality. 

However, there is no need to panic as they are well on course to qualify for the knockout stage. 

England only need a draw in their final group game against Panama to book their place in the Round of 32.
