Michael Carrick to continue as Manchester United head coach

Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as the permanent head coach of the club on a two-year deal.

Following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, Carrick took charge on an interim basis in January.

The former Middlesbrough manager has impressed the United hierarchy after securing a guaranteed third-place finish with a game to spare, along with Champions League qualification for the first time since the 2023/24 season.

In Carrick’s 16 games at the helm, the Red Devils have recorded 11 wins, three draws, and two defeats, a spell that opened with four straight wins and notable triumphs against Manchester City and Arsenal.

Since his appointment, no side has collected more points than United in the Premier League. He has also been nominated for the Manager of the Season award.

The former England midfielder is one of United’s most successful and decorated players. He played 464 games for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Upon his appointment, he said: “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.

“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”

The Red Devils have been linked with several midfielders, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and are expected to strengthen that area following Casemiro’s departure ahead of the new season.
