Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford has opened up on his frustration over limited playing time since returning to the club, admitting the situation has not gone as he expected, the Telegraph reports.
James Trafford returned to the Citizens during the summer transfer window following the departure of first-choice goalkeeper Ederson Santana de Moraes to Fenerbahçe.
The 23-year-old is understood to have turned down interest from Newcastle United in favour of a return to his boyhood club, with the aim of securing regular playing time in the Premier League.
He made a strong start to the season under Pep Guardiola, starting the opening three league fixtures against Wolves, Tottenham and Brighton.
However, the England U21 international later lost his place in the side after the arrival of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before the close of the transfer window.
Since the Italian’s arrival, Trafford has yet to feature in the Premier League and has been limited to appearances in domestic cup competitions.Reflecting on the situation, Trafford admitted the reality has been difficult to accept.
“It wasn’t what I expected coming into the season,” Trafford said. “And I tried to guard against the situation happening, but it’s the reality.”
The former Burnley shot-stopper has made 11 appearances across all competitions this season, while Donnarumma has featured 30 times in all competitions.
Despite his limited playing opportunities, Trafford could still end the campaign on a high, with a chance to claim his first trophy for the Citizens when they take on Arsenal at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final.
The 23-year-old will be eager to seize the opportunity if called upon, as he looks to impress against the Premier League leaders and help deliver the first major silverware of the season to the Etihad Stadium.
