Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has identified two potential replacements for the injured Marc Cucurella ahead of the Blues’ Premier League clash with Burnley on Saturday.
Cucurella, who has been a pivotal figure for the Blues since his arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion, sustained the injury just before half-time in Chelsea’s recent 2-2 draw against Leeds United.
The Spaniard is expected to spend some time on the sidelines, with Rosenior admitting that his return date remains uncertain.
“I can’t give an exact timeframe on Marc,” Rosenior revealed during his press conference on Thursday.
“He suffered a hamstring injury just before half-time in the Leeds game. It’s a real shame because he’s an outstanding player, and one of the best left-backs in the world.”
With Cucurella sidelined, Rosenior confirmed that Malo Gusto and Jorrel Hato are the primary candidates to deputise at left-back.
‘‘It’s a shame not to have Marc available but we have Jorrel [Hato] and we have Malo [Gusto] who can play on that side,” he added. “So we have really good players that can cover. Of course, the sooner Marc gets back, the better.”
The Chelsea boss also provided updates on Reece James and Cole Palmer, stating that both players are being closely monitored and managed to ensure optimal fitness.
“With Reece and Cole, it’s based on day by day,” Rosenior said. “In fact, it’s not just those two but how each player feels.
“At the moment they [Palmer and James] are both fully fit and both available for selection.”
“They both trained really well today and with those two players, having them in the team makes us a really strong side.’’
Chelsea currently sit fifth in the Premier League with 44 points, just one point behind Manchester United and six behind Aston Villa in third.
Rosenior will hope that the availability of James and Palmer can offset the absence of Cucurella as the Blues aim to maintain their push for a UEFA Champions League spot.
