Tonali at the double as Newcastle knock 10-man Aston Villa out of the FA Cup

Newcastle United secured a 3-1 comeback victory over 10-man Aston Villa at Villa Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening.

Harvey Barnes was presented with the game’s first real chance in the ninth minute, but his effort from the edge of the area flew wide.

In the 14th minute, Tammy Abraham broke the deadlock to give the host the lead after a well-worked free-kick move between Morgan Rogers and Douglas Luiz, and the Englishman was there to score his first goal since his return to Villa Park in the winter window.

At the other end, Villa squandered two opportunities to draw level. First, Barnes found the side-netting after he teed up with William Osula before Luiz sent his effort from 30 yards out well over the bar.

On the stroke of halftime, Marco Bizot was sent off following a foul on Jacob Murphy outside the area, and the hosts were down to 10 men.

In the 63rd minute, Sandro Tonali restored parity after Emiliano Martinez’s clearance broke kindly to him, and he found the net via a deflection.

The Italian midfielder completed the comeback in the 76th minute when he was found by Dan Burn, and he unleashed a belter through the crowd into the bottom corner beyond Martinez.

In the 88th minute, Nick Woltemade scored the Magpies’ third goal when he converted from close range, following a loose ball in the area.
