Manchester City breeze past Salford to reach FA Cup fifth round

Manchester City claimed a 2-0 victory over Salford City in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The host took an early lead inside the opening sixth minute when Rayan Ait-Nouri’s attempted cross deflected off Alfie Dorrington and past goalkeeper Matthew Young.

In the 23rd minute, Omar Marmoush thought he had doubled City’s advantage with a powerful volley but was denied by the offside flag.

Just before the break, Salford mustered an attack of their own as Ben Woodburn saw his half-volley tipped over the bar by James Trafford.

Moments later, Brandon Cooper squandered a glorious opportunity to draw the visitors level, as his header at the back post flew wide.

Shortly after the restart, Ryan McAidoo found Tijjani Reijnders with a through ball, but Young denied the Dutchman.

At the other end, Trafford was called into action again as he denied Kelly N’Mai with his chest.

In the 81st minute, substitute Marc Guehi scored his debut goal and doubled City’s lead after he tapped home on the rebound after Young had palmed away Rayan Cherki’s cross to give the Citizens the two-goal cushion.

Moments later, Antoine Semenyo almost got on the scoresheet, but his low-driven effort struck the post.
