Manchester secured a 2-1 comeback victory over reigning champions Liverpool in a mouthwatering Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday evening.
The visitors could’ve had an early lead inside the first minute when Bernardo Silva slipped Erling Haaland through on goal, but Alisson Becker quickly came off his line to deny the Norwegian.
Moments later, Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush sent their respective efforts well over the bar.
Liverpool’s best chance of the game came in the 26th minute when Alexis Mac Allister found Mohamed Salah at the edge of the area, but the Egyptian was unable to get his shot away.
At the other end, Haaland saw his effort sail straight into the gloves of Alisson from Rodri’s delivery as both sides searched for the opener.
Shortly after the restart, Salah failed to connect cleanly with his finish from Cody Gakpo’s low cross into the area, before Dominik Szoboszlai struck his effort straight at Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Moments later, Ruben Dias tried his luck from a distance, but his effort from 25 yards out flew just wide of the post.
In the 74th minute, Szoboszlai broke the deadlock and gave the Reds the lead with an unstoppable free kick from distance, leaving Donnarumma rooted to a spot.
10 minutes later, Silva restored parity after Haaland flicked on Cherki’s cross and the City’s skipper finished past the onrushing Alisson.
Deep into stoppage time, the Citizens were awarded a penalty after Alisson brought down Matheus Nunes in the area.
Haaland stepped up for the spot-kick and converted beyond Alisson, scoring his first league goal at Anfield to give City the lead.
Minutes later, Cherki thought he had scored City’s third goal after he rolled the ball into an empty net from his own half, but after a VAR check, the goal was ruled out by referee Craig Pawson, and Szoboszlai was sent off for a foul on Haaland.
Manchester City completed their first league double over Liverpool since the 1936/37 campaign and are now six points behind league leaders Arsenal.
