Manchester United snap eight-game winless run against Spurs as Carrick continues perfect start

Manchester United claimed a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The host could’ve taken an early lead inside the opening 30 seconds of the game when Bryan Mbeumo shot from an acute angle, but his effort sailed well over the bar.

Minutes later, Casemiro had his sights on goal from 25 yards out, but his effort was parried away by Guglielmo Vicario.

Matheus Cunha thought he had given the Red Devils the lead in the 19th minute after he met Diogo Dalot’s low cross first-time, but his effort curled just wide of the top right corner before Bruno Fernandes dragged his effort wide of the post.

On the half-hour mark, Cristian Romero was sent off for a foul on Casemiro, and Spurs were reduced to 10 men.

In the 38th minute, Mbeumo gave United the lead after Kobbie Mainoo got onto a short corner, teeing the Cameroonian up at the edge of the area, who found the bottom corner.

Just before the break, Vicario was called into action again as he palmed away Casemiro’s powerful header to keep the Lilywhites in the contest.

Four minutes after the restart, Amad Diallo thought he had doubled United’s lead after he tapped home Luke Shaw’s low cross, but the Ivorian was denied by the offside flag.

The Red Devils continued to search for a second, and they almost got it in the 52nd minute when Casemiro tried his luck from a distance, but his effort was gathered by Vicario.

Moments later, Shaw was the next to have a go at goal, but his effort was parried away by Vicario.

In the 68th minute, United were denied a goal by the offside flag again after Amad had the ball in the back of the net, as Fernandes was offside in the buildup.

Minutes later, Fernandes saw his long-range effort collected by Vicario as the Red Devils searched for a second.

However, in the 81st minute, Fernandes doubled the host’s lead after he got onto Benjamin Sesko’s header, and he guided the ball into the bottom corner.

Manchester United retain their fourth spot in the Premier League and are four points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea.
