Manchester City knock out Newcastle to set up Carabao Cup final with Arsenal

Manchester City secured a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, advancing to the final 5-1 on aggregate.

Omar Marmoush broke the deadlock in the seventh minute after he was played in behind, and Dan Burn’s attempted clearance deflected off him and over Aaron Ramsdale.

The visitors almost got an instant response when Nick Woltemade found Joe Willock, but the Englishman’s effort was denied by James Trafford.

At the other end, Tijjani Reijnders’ powerful strike from the edge of the box was palmed away by Ramsdale.

Moments later, Trafford was forced into another smart save as he denied Anthony Gordon a leveller.

However, in the 29th minute, Marmoush doubled his tally and City’s lead after Antoine Semenyo’s cross was deflected by Kieran Trippier into the air, and the Egyptian headed home the second.

Three minutes later, Reijnders added to the host’s tally after Semenyo’s blocked effort rolled into his path, and the Dutchman picked out the bottom corner.

Shortly after the restart, Yoane Wissa was played in behind by Sandro Tonali, but he miscued his attempt, and the chance went begging.

Just past the hour mark, Anthony Elanga pulled one back for the Magpies after he wriggled his way into the area and curled in an effort off the post.

Minutes later, Harvey Barnes thought he had gotten Newcastle’s second goal, but his effort was ruled out for offside before Elanga missed the target from close range.

At the other end, Erling Haaland was denied twice as City secured their place in the Carabao Cup final for the 10th time.
