Can Newcastle overturn a two-goal Carabao Cup deficit at Man City?

Manchester City play host to holders Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium in Wednesday’s second leg of the Carabao Cup.

The Citizens triumphed 2-0 over the Magpies in the first leg of the Carabao Cup last month.

Match preview

Only two of the 32 teams to win the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final tie away from home have been eliminated. They were West Ham in 1971/72 (vs Stoke) and Tottenham in 1986/87 (vs Arsenal).

Newcastle are looking to become just the second team to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg to reach the Carabao Cup final after Aston Villa against Tranmere in 1993/94.

Since taking over at Man City in the summer of 2016, Pep Guardiola has won all nine of his home games against Newcastle with an aggregate score of 26-2.

Guardiola has also won 10, drawn one and lost one of his 12 home games in the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies haven’t scored at the Etihad since DeAndre Yedlin netted in a 2-1 defeat against City in September 2018. Their last win at the stadium was in the EFL Cup fourth round in 2014/15.

Man City have failed to reach the Carabao Cup final just once in six attempts after winning the first leg of the semi-final.

Newcastle have won just three of their 16 away games in all competitions in the 2025/26 season, drawing six and losing seven.

If the Citizens get past Newcastle, they’ll be just the fourth team to reach a 10th EFL Cup final after Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Despite playing fewer than half the minutes available this season (144/360), no Newcastle player has created more chances in the Carabao Cup this season than Anthony Gordon (6), while only Bruno Guimarães (11) and Joelinton (9) have had more shots (6).

Rayan Cherki has registered three goals and one assist in three EFL Cup games this season, averaging a direct goal contribution in the competition every 42.2 minutes.
