Atletico Madrid reach verbal agreement to sign Ademola Lookman in a €40m deal

Atletico Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Atalanta to sign Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, per Fabrizio Romano.

The deal includes a €35 million fixed fee, €5m in performance-related add-ons payable to Atalanta and a long-term contract with Diego Simeone’s side.

Fenerbahçe was the frontrunner for the signature of the Nigerian, but Atletico moved ahead of the Turkish side, having matched their offer.

Lookman has been pushing for a move away from Bergamo since his failed transfer with Inter Milan last summer and broken relationship with former manager Ivan Juric.

He has made 137 appearances for La Dea, scoring 55 goals and providing 27 assists across three and a half seasons with the Nerazzurri.

Giacomo Raspadori made a switch from Atletico to Atalanta earlier in this window, which prompted Los Rojiblancos to make a move for the Nigerian.

Lookman hasn’t been at his best this campaign, racking up just 3 goals and 2 assists in 19 appearances.

However, the 28-year-old rediscovered his form at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he found the back of the net three times and provided four assists in the tournament to guide Nigeria to a third-place finish.

Lookman will be a big boost for Simeone’s side for the remainder of the season in their quest for silverware.
