Manchester City returned back to winning ways as they secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Marc Guehi had the opportunity to score on his City debut and give the host the lead in the fourth minute after he rose highest to meet Bernardo Silva’s corner, but the Englishman’s header was kept out by José Sá.
However, two minutes later, Omar Marmoush gave City the lead after Matheus Nunes whipped in an inviting cross and the Egyptian tapped home the opener.
Moments later, Guehi found Antoine Semenyo with a through ball, but his effort from the area was saved by Sa.
The Citizens continued to search for a second and almost got it in the 17th minute after Rayan Cherki found himself in a glorious position to find the net, but the Frenchman skied his effort.
At the other end, the visitors mustered a chance themselves as teenager Mateus Mané tried his luck from range, but his effort flew high and wide.
Just past the half-hour mark, Marmoush almost doubled his tally and City’s advantage but his effort rattled the right post.
Minutes later, City appealed for a penalty after the ball struck Yerson Mosquera’s arm in the area, but after a VAR review, referee Farai Hallam stuck with his on-field decision and awarded no penalty.
Nico O’Reilly was the next to have a shot at goal minutes later, but his effort flew wide, not troubling Sa in Wolves’ goal.
In the second added minute of halftime injury time, Semenyo doubled the host’s advantage when he latched onto Bernardo’s pinpoint pass, and he finished past Sa.
Shortly after the restart, João Gomes could’ve halved the deficit, but his long-range effort went wide.
At the hour mark, Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders both missed the target with their efforts as City searched for a third.
At the other end, Mateus Mané fired in a inviting cross and Yerson Mosquera met it with an header but his effort was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, before Strand Larsen sent his header wide.
In the 78th minute, Semenyo almost got his second of the afternoon, but his effort clipped the crossbar to deny City a third.
At the other end, the bar also came to City’s aid when Mosquera’s header from Mané’s corner struck the woodwork.
City absorbed Wolves’ pressure and secured all three points, clinching their first Premier League win of the New Year.
