Olympique de Marseille have opened talks with Arsenal to sign youngster Ethan Nwaneri on loan for the remainder of the season, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Nothing has been agreed yet between both parties, but the deal will include a fee that is changeable, depending on appearances, and no option to buy.
The 18-year-old has endured limited playing time at the Emirates this campaign following the Gunners’ summer signings of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, despite some eye-catching cameos last season.
He made 37 appearances in all competitions and found the back of the net nine times last campaign.
The youngster burst onto the scene as a 15-year-old when he became the youngest player to ever appear in the Premier League.
Speaking at the time, Mikel Arteta said, “It’s just one step, and all the steps in your career are not forward, and you have to know that. You can go forward, then backwards, and then forwards.
“You fall, you go back – that’s, unfortunately, this industry and the football career of any player.”
He has also represented England at Under-16s, 17s, 19s, and 21s but is yet to get a senior call-up.
The 18-year-old signed a new long-term contract in the summer, committing his future to the club until 2030.
Earlier this month, Arsenal rejected an attempt from West Ham United to land Nwaneri on loan, with the club reportedly prioritising maintaining squad depth for the second half of their title-chasing season.
However, the Gunners and Nwaneri could favour a move to Marseille until the end of the season if guaranteed regular playing time in Ligue 1.
Marseille are currently third in Ligue 1 this campaign after 22 games, eight points off league leaders Lens.
The Phocians finished second in the league last term, and the nine-time French champions are desperate for another title.
Roberto De Zerbi wants to bolster his attack for the second half of the season and is convinced Nwaneri could be a solid addition to his squad.
