Newcastle United missed the chance to go fifth in the Premier League as they were held to a goalless stalemate by bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Sunday afternoon.
Just past the quarter-of-an-hour mark, Nick Woltemade had two chances in quick succession to break the deadlock, but the German couldn’t find the net.
First, Harvey Barnes whipped in a delightful cross for Woltemade, but his header from 10 yards out floated wide, before the German headed over the bar from Kieran Trippier’s curling free-kick.
At the other end, Mateus Mané went close to opening the scoring after the Magpies failed to clear their lines from a Yerson Mosquera long throw, but the teenager’s half volley was calmly gathered by Nick Pope.
Just before the break, Malick Thiaw could’ve gotten the opener for the visitors but his effort from a Bruno Guimaraes’ corner was cleared off the line by Hugo Bueno and Joelinton couldn’t convert the rebound from close-range.
In the sole minute of additional time, Hugo Bueno tried his luck from distance but his effort flew over the bar as he tried to find the far corner.
Shortly after the restart, Gomes found Mosquera in the area but the defender’s header went just wide.
Just past the hour mark, Guimaraes whipped in a first-time cross to the back post but Joelinton failed to make a clean contact with the ball and the chance went begging.
Moments later, Trippier had the chance to break the deadlock from a free-kick but his curling effort hit the side netting of Jose Sa’s post.
Guimaraes and Joelinton both came close to scoring in quick succession late on as the Magpies skipper’s first-time strike inside the box was initially parried away by Sa before Joelinton’s headed rebound was collected by the Wolves goalkeeper.
Deep into stoppage-time, the visitors appealed for a penalty after Guimaraes went down in the area but after a VAR check, referee Samuel Barrott waved away the appeals.
However, the Magpies’ captain could have won it for Newcastle at the death, but his effort from the edge of the box flew wide.
