Manchester United have relieved Ruben Amorim of his duties as the head coach of the club after 14 months in charge.
The club statement read: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
The 40-year-old joined the Red Devils from Sporting Lisbon on 1 November 2024 on a three-year contract until June 2027, with a club option of an additional year.
He guided United to their lowest Premier League finish, 15th with 42 points, in his first season in charge and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur last season.
The Red Devils spent over £200 million in the summer to bring in the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens.
However, they endured a difficult start to this season after they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby Town in August.
Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United leaves United in sixth place in the Premier League standings after 20 matches.
After the game, Amorim hinted at his discontent with the club’s hierarchy, saying in his post-match press conference that he considered himself the “manager” of United, not the “coach”.
The club are searching for their seventh full-time manager or head coach since Sir Alex Ferguson departed in 2013 after 26 and a half years in charge.
Former midfielder and current Under-18 coach Darren Fletcher will take charge against Burnley on Wednesday as interim manager.
