Barcelona submit official loan bid for Al Hilal’s João Cancelo

Barcelona have submitted an official bid to re-sign João Cancelo on a six-month loan deal from Al Hilal, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 31-year-old joined the Saudi outfit from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 for a reported fee of €25 million on a three-year contract until June 2027.

He has since then made 45 appearances for the Al-Zaeem, scoring three goals and providing 14 assists.

Earlier, it was reported that Cancelo was on the verge of moving to Inter Milan, as the clubs had already reached an agreement. However, the player himself put the transfer on hold to try and join Barcelona, the club he dreams of playing for.

Cancelo already has experience playing for Barcelona. In the 2023/24 season, he spent half a year in Catalonia on loan from Manchester City, who owned his rights at the time.

He made 42 appearances for the Blaugrana, scoring 4 goals and providing 5 assists.

The Catalan club has been looking for a centre-back to replace Andreas Christensen but has struggled to find many quality short-term options in the winter market.

Cancelo’s versatility does mean that he can play in both full-back positions, which would allow Jules Kounde to move back into central defence if required by Hansi Flick.
