Michael Carrick has compared Nick Woltemade with Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham after watching his performance during Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Fulham.
Woltemade has proved to be an important player for Newcastle United since joining from VfB Stuttgart in the summer, especially after Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool.
Eddie Howe’s side clearly needed to replace Isak’s goalscoring ability, and Woltemade has done it admirably well.
The 23-year-old is currently leading Newcastle United’s goalscoring charts with four goals from six appearances in the league.
Carrick was clearly impressed by the German goalscorer, not just by his ability to score but also by his vision.
“Nick Woltemade reminds me of Teddy Sheringham,” the former Manchester United midfielder told BBC’s MOTD.
“Teddy was a clever footballer and really, really good in the box. He was brilliant at linking and bringing other people into play.
“Woltemade has similar qualities.”
Another player that caught Carrick’s attention was Guimaraes, who scored the 90th-minute winner for Newcastle against Fulham.
“Bruno Guimaraes pops up at the right moments, doesn’t he?” Carrick said about the midfielder.
“He’s done it for a decent period of time now, and he’s the man that they look to.
“He doesn’t always have the end-product, but he always provides that leadership on the pitch.
“He is their talisman, and he creates that extra bit of energy in the stadium by winding the fans up.”
Only Woltemade has scored more Premier League goals than Guimaraes (three) for Newcastle this season, which speaks volumes about his goalscoring instinct.
After this home win, Newcastle currently sit 11th in the Premier League table with 12 points.
Still far from ideal, but the consecutive wins could help Newcastle re-enter the competition for European spots.
