Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim was full of praise for “perfect” wing-back Amad Diallo after Sunday’s important 2-1 win over Liverpool.
Harry Maguire understandably stole the limelight after scoring a late winner with a header at Anfield, but Manchester United’s early goal was just as crucial.
The visitors took the lead after just two minutes into the game, and it was Diallo’s run and outstanding vision that led to Bryan Mbeumo’s opener.
The Ivory Coast international was eventually substituted off just before the hour mark, but Amorim insisted that it was only because of the yellow card situation.
Diallo ‘perfect’ in new position
“Amad is doing so well in that position (right wing-back), he was perfect for that position,” the Portuguese head coach said after the game.
“He was upset when I made the sub, but he had a yellow card. There was a lot of man-to-man on the side.
“So, it was just about that. If not, he (would have) continued in the game because he’s so important for us. He struggled these weeks, but we are here for him, and that’s the most important thing.”
Diallo, who is naturally a right winger, might have initially struggled to fit into Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.
The formation uses two number 10s, instead of conventional wingers, so Diallo has had to play further down the field as a wing-back on many occasions, a position he has adjusted to really well.
His ability to take on defenders in wide areas puts a lot of pressure on opponents, and the fact that he has featured in seven of Manchester United’s eight Premier League games so far this season suggests that Amorim sees his importance to his system.
The win against Liverpool is evidence that, while Amorim has been criticised for his adamant use of the three-at-the-back system, the structure could work, even against top teams.
Diallo’s strong performance at right wing-back would prove crucial if Manchester United were to achieve success with this formation.
