Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon insisted that he could still improve as a player after his goalscoring display in England’s 5-0 win over Latvia on Tuesday.
It was an expected win for Thomas Tuchel’s England side, but they still have to get the job done.
Gordon opened the path to victory with his goal in the 26th minute after cutting inside and curling the ball to the far post.
It went smoothly for the visitors after, with Harry Kane eventually taking the limelight after grabbing a brace.
For Gordon, it was an important performance to convince Tuchel that he is capable of being in the starting line-up for England, and he is clearly not shy about competition for spots.
“Amazing. It is something I have dreamed of as a kid,” Gordon told BBC Radio 5 Live about helping England secure the ticket to the World Cup.
“Probably didn’t hit me till I got into the changing room and saw everyone celebrating.
“I think definitely in the last three performances they have been my best for England. I still feel like I can do more. If I want to be a top elite world-level winger, I have got loads more to do.
“I’m not scared of competition. It pushes me to be better, it pushes us all to be better.
“Every young lad dreams of playing in a World Cup for England.”
It speaks volumes about his mentality that one of the first things that came to Gordon’s mind after such an important win is that he can do even more.
However, the international break has come to an end, and he must soon shift his focus to Saturday’s visit to Brighton with Newcastle United.
Gordon, who has already had three goals in the Champions League this term, has yet to score in the Premier League so far.
The three-match suspension certainly played a part, but if Newcastle are to secure European football again, they need Gordon to be back on the score sheets.
