Gary Neville and Roy Keane have different opinions on who is currently the best midfielder in the Premier League between Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo and Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
These two are obviously among the best-performing players in the Premier League at the moment.
Caicedo has made more tackles and interceptions than any other player in the whole league and is currently the joint-top scorer at Chelsea.
Rice, on the other hand, is the key midfield engine as well as a creator who has helped Arsenal top the league table.
Neville, who saw Caicedo’s superb performance against Liverpool last Saturday, believes the Ecuador international currently holds the title of being the number one midfielder.
“I said it on Saturday, after the Chelsea vs Liverpool game, that Caicedo is the best midfield player in the league,” Neville said on Overlap’s Stick to Football.
“I mentioned (Ryan) Gravenberch, Rodri, Declan Rice, they’re sort of the competitors for that.”
Keane, however, prefers Rice, whom he believes offers more than his Chelsea counterpart.
“I would go with Rice every day of the week,” Keane responded.
“He’s just got that package, a little bit extra on all the other parts on Caicedo, I think. I’d go with Rice.”
Obviously, these player rankings are mostly subjective, and different people prefer different types of players.
It is quite interesting that while they both are good defensive midfielders who can help offensively, they play quite differently.
Caicedo is more of a ball-winner who tends to chase the ball, while Rice prefers to position himself in opponents’ passing lanes and be ready for duels.
Caicedo arguably has the better numbers at the moment, but ultimately, everything is about winning the title, and Rice is closer to achieving that.
That said, any team would be happy to have either of these two at their disposal.
