Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that head coach Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United is not in immediate danger.
Amorim is certainly in a more comfortable position than he was a week ago, thanks to Manchester United’s convincing 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend.
Mason Mount, in particular, even showed his support for the Portuguese head coach after the match, saying that he was “100 per cent behind the gaffer”.
That said, in the end, the decision is on the hierarchy, including co-controlling owner Ratcliffe.
Fortunately for Amorim, the message is clear: he has time.
“He has not had the best of seasons,” Ratcliffe told The Times’ The Business podcast when speaking about Amorim.
“Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be.
“The press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success.
“They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow.
“You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.”
Ratcliffe further added that the Glazers family, who remain the majority owners of the club, are not pushing him to make a decision, either.
“It’s not going to happen,” the club co-owner added.
“That probably sums it up. We’re local and they’re the other side of the pond.
“That’s a long way away to try and manage a football club as big as complex as Manchester United. We’re here with feet on the ground.”
Amorim, who joined Manchester United back in November 2024, is under contract with the club until 2027.
Ratcliffe’s words suggest that the Portuguese will have until the end of his contract to prove himself.
Still, a second season without European football would certainly affect the club financially and, consequently, the club’s stance on his future.
Currently, Manchester United sit 10th in the Premier League table, six points behind first-placed Arsenal after seven games.
