Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already made his decision about Ruben Amorim’s future at the club ahead of Saturday’s clash with Sunderland, according to reports.
After last week’s defeat to Brentford, Manchester United currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, already eight points behind leaders Liverpool after six matches.
Taking into account the upset loss to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup last month, it has been a disastrous start to the season for Amorim’s men.
This obviously cannot continue if they are to at least qualify for European football, and something needs to change with Amorim being the one under the most pressure to deliver.
According to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, however, the Portuguese head coach’s immediate future at Old Trafford is not dependent on his team winning this weekend.
“From speaking to people, even if they lost to Sunderland, I don’t think that would be the end for Amorim,” Whitwell said on Talk of The Devils.
“Sir Jim Ratcliffe is the ultimate decision maker on this, really.
“I know that he would take recommendations from (CEO) Omar Berrada and (Director of Football) Jason Wilcox, and the Glazers certainly have a voice in this as well, but Ratcliffe is the one to decide.
“I’m told that he wants to give Amorim the full season because it’s a new squad to a degree.”
While it is understandable that Ratcliffe reportedly would want to give Amorim time to work on his squad, it is unimaginable that a loss to Sunderland would not push the former Sporting boss closer to an exit.
Football is a results-based business, after all, and unless Manchester United start winning again and quickly, the head coach is usually the first one to go.
