Phil Foden and Savinho were on target as Manchester City eased past Huddersfield to win 2-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Pep Guardiola made nine changes to the side that drew late on with Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, with only Foden and Nico O’Reilly retaining their spots.
Eight homegrown players featured against the League One side, as academy youngsters Divine Mukasa, Jaden Heskey and his brother Reigan all made their first senior appearances for the Cityzens.
Mukasa threatened early with a blocked shot and a saved header, but it was his clever interplay with Foden that sparked the breakthrough, as the youngster’s pass set up Foden’s stunning 20-yard screamer into the bottom corner on 18 minutes.
The Englishman got the chance to double Citizens’ lead in the opening half an hour from a 20-yard free kick, but he blasted his effort well over the crossbar.
The host could have drawn level when on-loan Aston Villa forward Zepiqueno Redmond received the ball at the edge of the box, but he could not find the target as he skied his effort.
City started the second half with more aggression, seeking to have a commanding lead through Mukasa and O’Reilly, but Guardiola’s men could not beat Lee Nicholls in the Terriers’ goal.
The visitors soon doubled their advantage in the 74th minute as Savinho was found by Foden wriggling his way into the congested box and unleashing a thunderous strike from a tight angle.
Kalvin Phillips returned to action off the bench in the 83rd minute, since his last City appearance in December 2023.
The Terriers could have halved the deficit in the closing stages of the game through Cameron Ashia, but his curler rattled the inside of the post, preserving James Trafford’s clean sheet on his return to the side.
