Manchester United claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
The Red Devils were fresh off a 3-0 defeat against local rivals Manchester City and sought to bounce back against the world champions.
United began the match on a high note and saw Bryan Mbeumo’s header parried away from goal by Robert Sanchez.
Trouble was spelt for Chelsea when Sanchez was shown a straight red card four minutes into the game for kicking Mbeumo on the knee, who was set on goal after he received a long ball from Altay Bayindir.
This prompted Enzo Maresca to make a double change immediately, as he brought on Filip Jorgensen for Estêvão and Pedro Neto for Tosin.
The Red Devils got their breakthrough in the 14th minute as Patrick Dorgu’s header into the box found Bruno Fernandes, who tapped in from close range to score a century of goals in a United shirt on his 200th Premier League appearance. The VAR intervened and gave a goal after a lengthy check, as it was a close call and the United skipper was just onside.
Maresca made another substitution in the 21st minute, as Cole Palmer made way for Andrey Santos due to an injury.
United thought they had doubled the lead with Casemiro’s free header at the far post, but Amad had already taken the ball out of play.
Minutes later, Casemiro got his goal following a free-kick that had Chelsea struggle to clear their lines, leaving the Brazilian to head home from close range.
Suddenly, Chelsea had a lifeline as goalscorer Casemiro received his second yellow card of the evening for wrestling Santos to the ground, bringing both teams down to ten men.
Ruben Amorim, looking to preserve his lead after the break, brought on Manuel Ugarte for Benjamin Sesko, who had a quiet evening.
Just past the hour mark, Wesley Fofana thought he had halved the deficit with a header from a near-post flick from James’ corner, but the offside flag was raised and the goal was ruled out.
With ten minutes left to play, the Blues pulled a goal back through Trevoh Chalobah, who headed home a well-executed James’ cross into the bottom corner.
Fernandes soon cooled the pressure around Old Trafford with a long-range effort, but Jorgensen was equal to it and palmed it away for a United corner.
Despite Chelsea mounting pressure on the United defence for an equaliser, the Red Devils did well to hold on for a much-needed win.
