Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig for a fee worth £51.8 million, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Simons has signed a five-year contract until 2030 with an option for a further two years after completing his medicals in London.
Spurs beat their London counterpart Chelsea to the signing of the Dutchman.
The Blues were also interested in the attacking midfielder but never made a bid for him even after agreeing to personal terms with him.
They were focused on the departure of Christopher Nkunku, who is joining AC Milan, and Alejandro Garnacho, who was Chelsea’s priority, joining the club.
Chelsea explored offloading a player to Leipzig as part of any deal for Simons, but that did not appeal to the Bundesliga club, and Simons flew to London on Wednesday to discuss a transfer with Spurs.
Simons, who can play in the middle or on the flanks, has been clear about his desire to leave this summer.
He came through Barcelona’s academy before spells at PSV and Paris Saint-Germain, who sold him to Leipzig last January.
Last season he played 33 games in all competitions for Leipzig, registering 11 goals and eight assists, despite being ruled out for 15 games after having surgery on a left ankle ligament injury.
Simons was handed his Netherlands senior international debut at the age of 19 by Louis van Gaal, and since then, he has 28 caps for the Oranje.
Spurs were determined to secure a transfer for Simons after missing out on key targets like Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, while star attacking midfielder James Maddison suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season.
Thomas Frank’s squad has been strengthened this summer with the permanent signings of forward Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel, who spent the second half of 2024/25 on loan at Spurs, as well as the addition of Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich.
Spurs have been impressive in this Premier League campaign, winning both of their games. They host Bournemouth tomorrow in their next match.
