RB Leipzig have open talks with Chelsea to sign Christopher Nkunku permanently, according to The Athletic.
The 27-year-old has been expected to leave Chelsea this summer, with him being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in January.
He joined the Blues in the summer of 2023 for £52million, signing a six-year contract which runs out in the summer of 2029.
The German’s first season in London was hampered by injuries, limiting his appearances and goal contributions.
Nkunku made 43 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 14 goals, but started just nine times in the Premier League due to his inability to break into Enzo Maresca’s first XI.
The forward is open to returning to Red Bull Arena after a successful first spell with the club, making 172 appearances and netting 70 times.
He won the DFB-Pokal twice, claiming the Bundesliga Player of the Year in the 2021/22 season. He also finished the 22/23 season as joint top scorer with 16 goals in 25 appearances.
He has attracted many suitors around Europe, with Bayern Munich interested in the forward since January.
Bayern were keen on his signature, but the move stalled after the club offered a loan deal with an option to buy, but Chelsea rejected the offer as they wanted a permanent deal.
A move to Leipzig for the Frenchman could see Xavi Simons trade places and make a switch to London in a separate deal.
The Blues have agreed personal terms with the Netherlands international, but the deal has slowed down due to Chelsea’s inability to make sales to accommodate new signings.
They have strengthened their flanks’ options with the signing of Jamie Gittens and Brazilian wonderkid Estêvão Willian and are closing in on agreeing a deal for Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United.
Chelsea have slapped a £43.2m transfer fee on Nkunku after previously having him on a £65m price tag in January.
More departures are expected in West London as Nicolas Jackson is set to leave the club, among others.
