Manchester United granted permission to finalise deal for Matheus Cunha

Manchester United are set to complete their first signing of the summer transfer window.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Red Devils have met the terms of Matheus Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly given United the permission to finalise a deal with the 26-year-old.

The forward is now set to undergo a medical at Man Utd before signing a long-term contract.

The Premier League giants had  originally wanted to pay the player’s release clause over five years, but have now agreed to release the figure in three installments over two years.

Cunha last penned a new deal with Wolves in February that tied his future to the club until 2029. But he has now decided to join Ruben Amorim’s side, despite the fact they will not be playing in Europe next season.

The Brazilian played a pivotal role in helping the Old Gold secure Premier League safety in 2024-25. He struck 15 goals and provided six assists in 33 league appearances, as the Midlands side finished 17 points above the relegation zone.

The versatile forward initially joined Wolves on loan in the winter transfer window of 2023 before completing a permanent transfer for £43m the following summer. He boasts a lot of experience at the top level, having played for the likes of Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin.

Cunha’s arrival could raise questions about Alejandro Garancho’s future at Old Trafford.

Amorim dropped the 20-year-old to the bench for the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, and the Argentine later expressed his displeasure against the manager.

The Portuguese boss has now reportedly told Garnacho to find a new club this summer.

Napoli have been linked with an interest in the young forward, but they may not be willing to meet United’s £60m valuation for the player.
