Following their extraordinary 3-0 European triumph over Real Madrid, Arsenal return to Premier League action on Saturday evening, welcoming Brentford to the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are unlikely to win the league title this campaign, but they will want to win as much as matches as possible before the season is over.
Match Preview
Arsenal marginally reduced the deficit to leaders Liverpool as they played out a 1-1 draw with Everton last time out. The Reds fell to a shocking 3-2 loss against Fulham, but despite the defeat, they are still 11 points clear at the top.
With only seven games remaining, the Gunners’ hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy is almost over. But Mikel Arteta’s side still have the opportunity to end their season on a high, as they sealed an extraordinary 3-0 victory against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.
Declan Rice was the hero for the Londoners as the talented midfielder produced two outrageous free kicks to put his side in control of the tie. Then, Mikel Merino added a third to spark euphoria among the Emirates Stadium crowd.
Had Thibaut Courtois not been at his brilliant best between the sticks, Arsenal’s scoreline could have been even more emphatic.
On the other hand, Brentford will be coming off a creditable draw with city rivals Chelsea last weekend. Mark Flekken made several crucial saves to prevent the visitors from scoring, but they could have sealed all three points if Sepp van den Berg had converted his opportunity.
The result means Thomas Frank’s side have won just one of their last five league matches, slipping to 12th in the standings.
Team News
The Gunners hero Rice and top forward Bukayo Saka were withdrawn through knocks in the last stages of their victory against Real. However, in a delightful Arsenal news, there are no serious concerns surrounding the duo’s availability for the return leg in Madrid. Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Jesus remain sidelined as they are all in the infirmary.
As far as Brentford are concerned, Frank will not be call upon the services of Fabio Carvalho, Igor Thiago and Josh Dasilva as the trio are currently battling injury issues.
