Argentina sealed qualification for the 2026 World Cup after humiliating their arch-rivals Brazil 4-1 in Buenos Aires on Tuesday night.
The qualifiers match, which was available to watch through live football streams, was dominated by Lionel Scaloni’s side from the beginning as they found themselves ahead within the opening four minutes.
After receiving a pass from Thiago Almada, Julian Alvarez brilliantly evaded two defenders before beating the goalkeeper with a gentle touch.
La Albiceleste doubled their advantage eight minutes later, with Enzo Fernandez blasting home Nahuel Molina’s cross.
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha sparked hopes of a comeback by pulling one back after a mistake from Cristian Romero. Cunha dispossessed Romero in his own half before unleashing an excellent shot that beat Emiliano Martinez.
However, Argentina restored their two-goal advantage before the break, with Alexis Mac Allister volleying into the back of the net.
Brazil boss Dorival Junior made three changes at half-time, featuring Endrick, Joao Gomes and Leo Ortiz.
But they failed to inspire a comeback, with Argentina threatening to extend their advantage.
In the 71st minute, substitute Giuliano Simeone wrapped up an emphatic victory for the hosts by firing home an incredible strike for his first international goal.
Tuesday’s 4-1 defeat is Brazil’s heaviest in a World Cup qualifier, with the humiliating result mounting pressure on manager Dorival, who has won just seven of his 16 matches in charge since taking over in early 2024.
The five-time World Cup winners had a brilliant opportunity to claim their first triumph against their arch-rivals since 2019 as Argentina were missing Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez due to injury issues.
However, they produced a disastrous performance at the Estadio Mâs Monumental to suffer a humiliating defeat.
The result leaves Brazil fourth in the table with 21 points. The top six teams will qualify for the World Cup.
