Scotland took a step towards retaining their Nations League A status as they overcame Greece 1-0 in the first-leg of their play-off at Karaiskakis Stadium.
The Tartan Army made an impressive start to the away fixture of the international break and found themselves ahead in the 33rd minute.
Scott McTominay was brought down inside the box for what appeared to be a soft penalty. But the Napoli midfielder showed great composure to side-foot the spot kick into the corner, putting his side in a dominating position.
This was McTominay’s 11th goal in 22 matches for his country, with the former Manchester United man also having an excellent Serie A season for his club.
Steve Clarke’s side could have extended their advantage but both Billy Gilmour and Che Adams failed to convert their opportunities.
Their wastefulness in front of goal meant the visitors had to endure a nervy second-half as Greece launched a brilliant onslaught.
Manager Ivan Jovanović featured 17-year-old Genk midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas after half-time and the youngster’s introduction served as the spark for their improved display.
Karetsas delivered a brilliant cross to set up Christos Tzolis but the Belgian Pro League star failed to hit the target with his effort.
Scotland were given another late scare when the hosts were awarded a penalty after Grant Hanley fouled Taxiarchis Fountas.
However, the decision was overturned by VAR because Hanley’s challenge was adjudged to have been outside the area.
Greece really pushed for an equaliser but the Tartan Army held on to secure a narrow victory in Piraeus.
Steve Clarke’s side finished third in Group A1 after losing three of their six matches, with Portugal and Croatia claiming the first two spots.
But they pulled off a spectacular 2-1 win over Poland in November to retain their hopes of staying in the top level of the Nations League.
