Newcastle United will return to FA Cup action on Tuesday night as they square off with Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
Eddie Howe’s side suffered a demoralising 4-1 defeat at Arsenal in their last league outing, while Blackburn played out a 1-1 draw with Norwich City at the weekend.
Match Preview
The Riversiders have been enduring a dismal run of form, winning just one of their previous 13 league matches.
Their most recent result saw them picking a 1-1 stalemate against Norwich at Ewood Park.
Marcelino Nunez scored the opener for the visitors midway through the first-half but Dominic Hyam’s towering header on 56 minutes ensured the spoils of the game were shared.
The result leaves John Eustace’s side 16th in the Championship table, with an incredible 16 points behind the playoff positions.
Blackburn now turn their focus to the FA Cup, a competition they have won six times but their last trophy came in 1928.
Their opponents on Tuesday are Newcastle who have also won six FA Cups but their last one came over 60 years ago.
The Magpies will enter the match on the back of a 4-1 defeat at Arsenal in the Premier League.
Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior all scored for the Gunners after an early own-goal from Sven Botman.
Joe Willock pulled one back on 84 minutes but that served as no consolation for the Magpies.
Eddie Howe’s side are currently 11th in the league standings after securing 35 points from 25 matches.
Team News
Blackburn boss John Eustace will be dealing with a few injury problems this week as John Fleck, Joe Rankin-Costello and Hayden Carter will all be missing due to fitness issues. Ryan Hedges will also be absent after he picked up a knock against Norwich last weekend.
As for Newcastle, Callum Wilson, Nick Pope, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Elliot Anderson and Matt Targett will be missing due to fitness issues. Meanwhile, Martin Dubravka’s availability is also doubtful due to illness.
