The Premier League will continue on Sunday as Newcastle United will host Liverpool in a blockbuster clash at St James’ Park.
The Magpies made a spectacular start to the 2023-24 campaign, thrashing Aston Villa 5-1.
Their emphatic victory led to hopes they could come away with full points from their trip to Manchester City.
However, they were brought down to earth by Pep Guardiola’s side who sealed a 1-0 success, with Julian Alvarez scoring the decisive goal.
On the other hand, Liverpool picked up a thrilling 3-1 victory over Bournemouth last week to return to winning ways following their 1-1 stalemate at Chelsea.
The Reds fell behind very early in the game when Antoine Semenyo struck into the bottom-right corner within the first three minutes.
But a stirring comeback from the home side saw Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah scoring to put the hosts 2-1 ahead before the interval.
A second-half red card to Alexis Mac Allister, which has since been rescinded, threatened to swing the momentum back in favour of the Cherries.
However, Diogo Jota’s strike helped to maintain Liverpool’s control as they comfortably ran out 3-1 winners at Anfield.
Preview
Newcastle United
Following a fourth-place finish last term, Eddie Howe’s men are now preparing to play in the Champions League this year.
They have made some excellent acquisitions this summer in the form of Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento as they aim to do well in England as well as in Europe.
The 1-0 result at the Etihad Stadium was disappointing but the Magpies restricted City to only one goal through their defensive discipline.
They now face another big test when they host Liverpool on Sunday.
Liverpool
Manager Jurgen Klopp has made massive changes to the squad in the summer transfer window following their disappointing 2022-23 season.
Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Jordan Henderson have all departed the club in a big summer clearout, as previously covered on Football Blog.
But the Reds have also brought in the likes of Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo as they aim to make a big comeback this term.
Klopp’s team were unconvincing in their opening game at Chelsea but they showed great spirit and passion against Bournemouth to pick up full points at Anfield.
Team News
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will not be able to call upon the services of Emil Krafth and Joe Willock who are both out of contention with ACL and thigh injuries respectively. Javier Manquillo has returned to training but he is unlikely to start on Sunday.
As for Liverpool, Mac Allister will be eligible to play after his red card was rescinded. But Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara will both sit out the game due to fitness issues.
