The Best Free Agents in Football this Summer

With the 2022/2023 season expected to end on the 30th of June, football fans and individuals who like placing bets on online sports books are eager to see which clubs will sign the top players out of contracts this summer. All players with expiring contracts will become free agents, and all clubs are rushing to sign the best players they can get.

While premier league clubs are usually the top contenders in signing top players, Saudi Arabia is eying the world’s most high-profile players; a move experts are terming as a threat to big European clubs. For instance, Cristiano Ronaldo moved there on a free transfer in January 2023, and several top European footballers are set to join him this summer. Nonetheless, here are the top 5 free agents this summer:

1.   Luka Modric

The Croatian midfielder was set to leave Real Madrid in 2022 but signed a one-year extension till 2023. There were reports that the midfielder would renew his contract, but he has decided to leave the club.

With an impressive record sheet, many top clubs will have him on their radar. He has 5 Champion League titles from 2014-2022, 2 Copa del Rey titles, 3 La Liga titles, 4 Super Cup UEFA titles, 4 Supercopa de Espana titles, and 5 FIFA Club World titles. He also won the La Liga Best Midfielder 2016 and the UEFA Club Football Award 2017 & 2018. Modric is also the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner.

2.   Roberto Firmino

Roberto Firmino is leaving Anfield this season after a successful career at the club. The club manager Jurgen Klopp is known to have a soft spot for Firmino and, at some point, called him the heart and soul of the team.

Having had 350 appearances and 100 goals, the Brazilian Forward has left a mark on the club since joining in 2015. Having won the Emirates FA Cup, Champions League, Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Community Shield, and UEFA Super Cup, it’s unlikely for him to remain a free agent for long. In fact, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Barcelona are reportedly eying him.

3.   Sergio Ramos

The Spanish centre-back has announced that he will be leaving Paris Saint Germain after a two-year contract at the end of this season. The Frenchman has been rumoured to transfer to Middle Eastern clubs, but no confirmation has been given.

Al-Ahli and Ali Ittihad have made offers to sign him. He is regarded as one of the greatest defenders of PSG, who starred in 57 matches during his two years at the club. With his impressive record of winning 4 Champions Leagues, 5 times Spanish champion, 2 times French Champion, and winning the UEFA Super Cup 3 times, it is evident that Sergio Ramos is a hot cake right now, so we should expect to hear that he has signed a contract soon.

4.   Diego Costa

Wolverhampton Wanderers(wolves) has announced that Diego Costa will be leaving after joining the club in September 2022 from Atletico Madrid. Costa appeared in 27 matches and scored 1 goal during the one season at Wolves.

He might have scored one goal for Wolves, but his role in the club cannot be underestimated. Diego is now one of the most valuable free agents this summer. With an impressive sheet of 2 Premier League titles, a League Cup winner, 2 times English Champion, 2 times Spanish Champion, and 1 time Europa League winner, he is still one of the best centre forwards in the Premier League.

5.   Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried Zaha is set to leave Crystal Palace this summer as a free agent. The young star has been in the club for 13 seasons starring in 461 matches and scoring 97 goals.

His record of winning an English Super Cup, being a one-time top goal scorer, and being promoted to the 1st League make him a valuable player. In October 2021, he became the first player to have 50 goals for Crystal Palace.

According to sources, Crystal Palace offered him a contract of 200,000 euros a week. A Saudi club, Al Ittihad, has also approached Zaha, but there has yet to be an offer. Marseille and Fenerbahce are eyeing him too.

Final Thought

The above players have displayed exceptional football skills, and we’re sure plenty of top clubs are eying them. As the season ends this week, don’t be surprised to hear new details about them joining new clubs.
