Chelsea will be looking to end their winless run in Europe when they lock horns with AC Milan at Stamford Bridge this Wednesday.
Graham Potter was in charge of the Blues for his first Premier League match at the weekend and was happy to see his side prevail over Crystal Palace 2-1.
Odsonne Edouard put the hosts in the ascendency with an early goal but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang restored parity before the interval. The match looked to be heading for a draw before Conor Gallagher found the winner with an absolutely thunderous strike.
Meanwhile, AC Milan returned to winning ways at the weekend as they thrashed Empoli 3-1 at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.
Both Serie A sides failed to break the deadlock for a long period before Ante Rebic struck in the 79th-minute. Then, Fode Ballo-Toure and Rafael Leo also earned their names on the scoresheet to make it a comprehensive victory for the Rossoneri.
Match Preview
Chelsea
Chelsea won the Champions League in 2020 but failed to defend their title last season, suffering a quarter-final elimination at the hands of Real Madrid. They have been far from convincing in Europe this season, with the Londoners yet to claim a victory and currently sitting at the bottom of Group E.
Thomas Tuchel lost his job after the 1-0 loss at Dinamo Zagreb but new boss Graham Potter also failed to lead his side to victory against RB Salzburg last time out. The Austrian side managed to take a point away from Stamford Bridge after Noah Okafor grabbed a late equaliser to cancel out the advantage of Raheem Sterling’s opening goal.
AC Milan
AC Milan haven’t faced Chelsea in the Champions League since 1999 when the two met in the group stages, with both games ending in draws. The Serie A giants have endured a dismal record on English turf but they will be confident to take a good result this Wednesday as they are unbeaten in their previous eight away matches.
Team News
Edouard Mendy and N’Golo Kante will not be available this week as they are recovering from injuries. While Jorginho’s involvement is also doubtful after picking up a knock in the Palace game.
Milan, on the other hand, are facing a big injury crisis at the moment. Theo Harnandez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mike Maignan, Divock Origi, Junior Messias and Alessandro Florenzi are all currently in the treatment room. To compound their problems, Simon Kjaer, Alexis Saelemaekers and Davide Calabria were also forced off injured in their 3-1 victory over Empoli at the weekend.
