England international Jack Wilshere is understood to be keen on a move to Major League Soccer as he looks to rebuild his career which has been hampered by numerous injuries, The Mirror reports.
The 28-year-old was recently contracted to West Ham United for two years, but was released earlier this month after the Hammers agreed to pay a significant portion of his wages for the final year of his deal.
In recent weeks, he has been linked with a potential move to the Scottish Premiership with Rangers, but The Mirror claims that he favours a move to Major League Soccer.
Wilshere has suffered multiple long-term injuries during his career. He was regarded as one of the best graduates coming through the Arsenal academy, but made just 195 appearances for them between 2008 and 2018.
He made the switch to the Hammers in the summer of 2018 with the view to resurrecting his career, but his fortunes did not change much as two long-term injuries meant that he featured for them on only 18 occasions.
He was deemed to be struggling with a back injury during the second half of the previous season, but the midfielder has personally revealed in his farewell note that he was fit and available for selection.
Hence, it appears that manager David Moyes was not keen on playing him and he now has the opportunity to pursue another club, where he can be guaranteed regular playing time.
A move to Major League Soccer seems a genuine prospect during the backend of Wilshere’s career and the likes of DC United and New York Red Bulls can be considered as suitable options for him.
DC have lacked the presence of a genuine goalscoring playmaker since the departure of Wayne Rooney in October last year and that has hampered their performances as they lie 13th in the Eastern Conference.
In comparison, New York Red Bulls have fared much better in the seven spot with eight points more and they have recently recruited a talented manager in Gerhard Struber.
With the MLS regular campaign almost complete, the clubs are likely to wait for the off-season to do any business. Both the above-mentioned sides have Designated Player spots vacant and could be interested in Wilshere, provided he proves his fitness.
Aside from the duo, Montreal Impact could be a surprise destination for Wilshere, suppose he wants to be reunited with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who is the head coach.
The Quebec-based outfit have just one Designated Player in the ranks in Victor Wanyama. The Kenya international joined the club from the Gunners’ arch-rivals in Tottenham Hotspur in March this year.
