Stuart Broad enters record books as England brush aside West Indies in the Third Test

The final test of the #raisethebatseries was a one-sided affair with England dominated the proceedings at Old Trafford. The West Indies opted to bowl first for the third test in a row after winning the toss and the hosts managed a credible 369 on the board.

In response, the Windies could only muster 197 runs and that put the Three Lions in the driving seat to claim a series win. Similar to the second test, England piled on the runs in the second innings and they declared at 226 for the loss of just two wickets.

Hence, the visitors were set a target of 399 and they made the worst possible start with two wickets falling for just 10 runs before the close of Day 3. The weather played spoilsport as the entire Day 4 was abandoned, but England still managed to pick up 10 wickets comfortably as the Windies rolled over for 129 runs in the second session of the final day.

There were a number of standout performances with both bat and ball for the Three Lions, but Broad undoubtedly stole the headlines. The 34-year-old scored a sublime 45-ball 62, which set the tone for his side in the first innings.

Coming onto bowl, Broad starred with 6/31 in the first innings and he came up with another four wickets in the second, as he registered his third 10-wicket haul in a match. On Day 5, he joined an elite group as he became only the seventh bowler in test history to bag 500 wickets.

He also became only the second Englishman after James Anderson to achieve the feat. Hence, they were no surprises that he was handed the man of the series, having bagged 16 wickets from his two tests.

The Three Lions retained the Wisden Trophy with a 2-1 series win, but perhaps, they could have won the opening test as well, had stand-in captain Ben Stokes not made the surprise choice of playing Mark Wood ahead of Broad.
