Flamengo midfielder has no interest in European return

Flamengo midfielder Gerson has said that he is happy at the Brazilian outfit and has no plans of returning to European football during this summer’s transfer window.

Gerson spent his time with AS Roma between 2016 and 2019, but he managed only 10 Serie A starts in his first two seasons. For the third year, the 23-year-old was loaned out to Fiorentina and he managed to catch the eye in his 36 league appearances – out of which 27 came from the starting lineup.

La Viola were obviously interested in signing him on a permanent basis, but he instead made the return to Brazil with Flamengo for a then club-record fee. Gerson has since made 42 appearances for the Rio de Janeiro outfit and he has completed 90 minutes in the majority of those games.

Gerson has already won the Serie A and Copa Libertadores titles alongside the Brazilian Super Cup in the space of the past 12 months, and he has now stressed that he has no plans of leaving Flamengo, who are on the level of European clubs, as per his opinion.

“I feel at home, I am happy, I am wanted and I am at a club that is on the level of European sides. We can’t shut doors, football shows this, but today I am very happy and fulfilled to be in the club of my heart. I rediscovered myself here and I want to win yet more trophies in this shirt,” He told Globo Esporte.

Tottenham Hotspur have been regularly linked with Gerson over the past few months and it was reported by Goal.com in June that they had failed with a £16m bid for his services.

Brazilian outlet Esporte Do R7 has since claimed that Spurs would need to offer around £45m to land the midfielder’s signature, but it now appears that Gerson has taken a principled stance to stay put with Flamengo.
